Understanding Coercion and Pregnancy

August 6, 2024

Coercion during pregnancy refers to situations in which individuals face undue pressure or manipulation from partners, family members, or others, influencing their decision-making processes related to their pregnancy. This can manifest in various forms, including emotional manipulation, financial control, threats of violence, or verbal and psychological abuse.

Understanding the dynamics of coercion is essential in identifying potentially harmful situations and seeking the necessary assistance to ensure personal safety and well-being.

Coercion during pregnancy is a distressing reality that affects many individuals, posing serious challenges to their reproductive health and well-being. Recognizing the signs of coercion and understanding the available resources for support is crucial in ensuring a safe journey through pregnancy and motherhood.

Recognizing the Signs and Seeking Support

Another name for coercion is Intimate Personal Violence or IPV. Pregnancy coercion involves using power and violence to manipulate, subdue, or subjugate a pregnant woman.

Recognizing the signs of coercion is the first step in addressing this challenging issue. Individuals experiencing coercion may feel trapped, isolated, or fearful about their pregnancy decisions. Some signs of coercion might be if you have been:

  • Restricted from accessing prenatal care
  • Pressured to isolate from supportive people like friends and family
  • Unable to access your own money, access assistance programs, or have been prevented from taking reasonable steps to purchase necessary items
  • Threatened in any way, such as:
    • “I’ll leave you and the baby if you don’t…”
    • “I’ll tell (x) that you (y) if you don’t…”
    • Physical threats

If you or someone you know is experiencing coercion during pregnancy, then you can reach out to trusted support networks such as healthcare providers, counselors, or advocacy organizations.  These organizations can provide the necessary guidance and assistance to navigate this difficult situation.

Taking Action and Ensuring Safety

Taking action to ensure personal safety and well-being is crucial when facing coercion during pregnancy. Building a support system of trusted individuals, seeking legal guidance, and accessing resources that offer protection and advocacy can empower individuals to make informed decisions about their pregnancy. Recognizing one’s rights and accessing the available resources for protection can help individuals regain control over their reproductive health and ensure a safe and healthy pregnancy journey.
